Eiichi YAMAMOTO, Ph. D (English Linguistics)

Professor Eiichi YAMAMOTO

Bio

Eiichi Yamamoto has been teaching at Kansai University since 1994. He obtained his master's degree in English linguistics at Osaka University of Foreign Studies in 1982. He then started teaching English and linguistics at Kink University in Osaka. After twelve years of experience there he joined the newly-established Faculty of Informatics at Kansai University. He also got his Ph. D from Kansai University in 2003.

His main academic interest is in linguistics, especially in pragmatic analyses of utterances both in English and Japanese. With a focus on implicature and the mechanism of how the extra meaning is created in a given context, he is trying to apply the concept to many seemingly unrelated language phenomena. His interest ranges from comparative linguistics, language pedagogy to ESP (English for Specific Purposes). He was granted a government funding (GP) for three years (2008-2011) in which he created online materials for prospective students to study prior to their study-abroad experiences.

As assistant to the president (since 2009), he has been vigorously promoting the implementation of a small sized English class (i.e., Tutorial English) across Kansai University campuses. Also as Vice Dean of the Division of International Affairs (since 2012) he has been trying to activate the relationship with overseas universities that Kansai has already been partnering with, but also launch new study-abroad programs so that Kansai students can broaden their horizon through these "internationalizing" projects.
