TAKEUCHI, Osamu, Ph.D.

Osamu Takeuchi, a.k.a. "Ree", is a professor of applied linguistics at the Faculty of Foreign Language Studies and the Graduate School of Foreign Language Education and Research, Kansai University, Osaka, Japan. . He was born in Nishinomiya, Hyogo, Japan. After finishing a local high school, he studied English language and American/British culture at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, Kobe, Japan. In 1987, he obtained his first master's degree in English linguistics from the Graduate School, Kobe City University of Foreign Studies.

His first job was a junior lecturer at Doshisha Women's Junior College, Kyoto, Japan. When he was a lecturer, he had the opportunity to study in the U.S. under a Fulbright Scholarship. A brief stay at Ohio Univ, Athens, Ohio, was followed by rigorous study at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS, currently known as Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey), California, USA. In 1992, he earned a second master's degree in TESOL with distinction from MIIS.

Upon returning to Japan, he taught applied linguistics and educational technology as an associate professor at Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts, Kyoto, Japan. He then earned his Ph.D. in Education at the Joint Graduate School in the Science of School Education, Hyogo University of Teacher Education, Hyogo, Japan, in 2005.

He had served as the Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Language Studies at Kansai University for 12 years and the Chair of the Graduate School of Foreign Language Education and Research for 14 years. He had also served as a member of the Board of the Trustees and the Board of the Councilors at Kansai University. He is currently a member of the Osaka Prefectural Board of Education.

His research interests include language learning strategies, self-regulation in L2 learning, L2 learning motivation, and the application of technology to language teaching. He is also interested in testing and materials development.

He received the JACET Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in 2004, the Outstanding Alumni Award (GSLEL) Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Monterey Institute of International Studies in 2005, the 2008 Award for Multimedia Teaching at the 4th Multimedia Teaching Contest, the 2009 LET Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, and the 2019 LET Award for Outstanding Journal Article.
